Climate-neutral web pages

To make the world just a little bit “greener,” we have taken steps to ensure that our web pages in the arvato AG network are climate-neutral.

Web pages, and particularly the servers used for hosting, consume a substantial amount of power.

To compensate for the CO2 emissions generated in the process of producing the required electricity, the first step is to measure power consumption. Next, CO2 emission factors are used to determine the amount of harmful greenhouse gases generated. We offset these harmful gases by participating in climate-protection projects aimed at reducing emissions. Such projects are most effective when carried out in developing and emerging countries, where the largest emission reductions can be achieved. This is also in keeping with the Kyoto Protocol.

arvato has chosen to support a water treatment project in Kenya.

Better health and environmental sustainability through clean water

According to World Health Organization data from 2010, nearly one billion of the world’s population lack access to safe drinking water. Boiling water is a common method of disinfection, but using firewood for that purpose leads to deforestation and is harmful to the environment. And if firewood is unavailable, people have no way to disinfect their water. The inevitable results are frequent illnesses and a higher mortality rate. Diarrheal diseases are the second most common cause of death among children under the age of five, and are responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million children each year.

The Kenyan project, implemented by First Climate Group and supported by arvato, is one of the largest water treatment projects that is not financed by government or the public sector. Its goal is to lower the rate of childhood mortality, improve maternal healthcare, combat diseases and promote environmental sustainability at the local level.
