Green logistics make good sense – ecologically and economically
From an early stage, the E-Plus Group needed a partner that could deal flexibly with the developments of the cell phone company and cover new demands emerging anywhere in the supply chain. With Arvato, E-Plus had an effective and innovative service provider right from the start, whether in establishing new services or meeting new targets, such as setting the company up for climate-neutral operation by 2020.
Environmental aspects are very important in the area of mobile telephony. We are very happy to have arvato as our long-term partner on this journey.Dr. Karsten Menzel, Head of Environment, Health and Safety, E-Plus Group
The services Arvato provides for the E-Plus Group include forward and backward logistics, warehousing, packaging SIM card starter packs and managing production processes and transport. Over the years, this scope of services has expanded successively to include aspects such as device repairs, warranty
processing and invoice management. The logistics hub for the E-Plus Group is Arvato’s 7,200 m2 site in Marienfeld, near Gütersloh, Germany. All the relevant sales channels are operated from this site. Marienfeld caters to over 750 BASE shops across Germany; more than 98 percent of orders are delivered the next day. In addition to traditional retailer delivery, there is also distributor delivery, stock delivery to BASE shops and logistics processing for telesales and web sales orders.
In order to map all the E-Plus Group’s various sales channels and brands, in 2001 a scalable, SAP-based IT solution was implemented, with interfaces to all the relevant E-Plus and Arvato systems. This provided maximum transparency for stock accounts, not to mention outstanding inventory results.
Arvato has recently been using targeted measures to support E-Plus on the route to sustainability. Among other things, the “climate-neutral logistics” service module includes a customized energy and carbon balance sheet (carbon footprint), in which all of the energy consumption and emissions for the business are calculated using dedicated software. Emission drivers can be systematically identified and assessed so that appropriate optimization measures can be initiated. Unavoidable carbon emissions are neutralized by means of compensation certificates that provide ongoing support for environmental projects in developing countries. All analyses and calculations of the accounting process comply with international standards and are verified by an external auditing firm when the accounts are prepared. The logistics building itself also plays a key role in this. In addition to modern heat conservation technology it also has geothermal floor heating. The result: long-term cost reduction and compliance with important environmental standards, without impairing the efficiency of the supply chain.
- Design and implement a powerful, scalable service supply chain that covers all sales channels.
- Ensure conformance with important environmental standards.
- A multichannel logistics site set up specially for E-Plus, run by Arvato.
- Environmentally conscious operation due to the use of renewable energy resources, emission-balancing optimization measures and compensation projects for unavoidable emissions.
