After a three-month installation and setup phase, a new “Lithoman IV S” offset printing press was put into operation at Mohn Media.
The 480-ton, 96-page web press by the manufacturer Manroland is 50 meters long, 16 meters wide and 11.50 meters high and with the format of a multistory apartment building the largest web-fed printer currently available on the market. To even be able to accommodate the volume, Mohn Media invested in two new halls and set the machine on an 80-cm thick concrete foundation plus an additional 40 cm of gravel to balance the load. The mammoth printer is capable of turning up to 10 tons of paper and 1,200 kg of ink into 4.8 million printed pages – per hour.
The new Lithoman is already fully booked for 2013: it will produce advertising supplements for hardware stores and discount retailers, which account for a third of Mohn Media’s total revenue. Clear evidence that the Internet and print media are not mutually exclusive, but in fact create synergies.
