Arvato South Africa supports project to qualify unemployed school leavers for BMW South Africa
Pretoria/Guetersloh. Arvato SA supported a local College named “Orbit FET College” (FET = Further Education and Training), which has been contracted by BMW South Africa, to technically train 1300 unemployed school leavers as new operators for production, in order for the manufacturer to increase the production of the new BMW 3 Series limousine. “With the qualification of only unemployed youth BMW wishes to actively reduce the youth unemployment in the region” says Kobus Potgieter, responsible Project Leader for BMW South Africa. The entire qualification initiative is also supported by the South African Government.
The manufacturer awarded the contract to the local non-profit organization Orbit FET College and the specialists of Arvato South Africa were nominated as their official training partner, as they were able to assure BMW of their qualities as training- and education supplier during the project tender-process.
Since 2004 Arvato South Africa has been operating as training provider for well known companies from the motor industry and beyond.
Due to a tight schedule Arvato South Africa assessed approximately 2000 applicants and their theoretical & practical basic knowledge and skills already in January and February 2012. These applicants had been pre-selected by BMW beforehand. Based on the results of these assessments, BMW then selected a total of 1300 unemployed school leavers for the training program. These youths are currently being prepared for their new tasks by Arvato and the Orbit FET College. BMW divided the training into three specific focus areas: automotive manufacturing, -paint and -assembly. All three focus areas consisted of theoretical- and a practical training sections.
“In order to be able to offer certified technical training in South Africa as a private service provider, a valid accreditation is required from the Government and MERSETA (Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority). While time constraints did not allow for obtaining our own certification, we opted for a private-public-partnership with the accredited training institution Orbit FET College”, explains Christian Bust, Managing Director of Arvato South Africa.
“To ensure a problem-free project completion, Arvato supported BMW SA and Orbit FET College with dedicated project-management staff”, says Sunette Aylward, responsible Project Manager at Arvato South Africa. Arvato's project tasks consisted of supporting the training-administration team, class-schedule planning, allocations of students to class rooms and teachers, supervising print and distribution of the learning materials, all theoretic trainings in „Classroom-Format“, assessments and tests of all students as well as the supervision of documentation and reporting of all results. Additionally, a 6-story and 2000 square meter large training centre, with 20 classrooms, a control centre and copy shop for learning materials was leased by Arvato and entirely renovated. Also the facility management is done by Arvato. About 20 additional full time employees were employed for the project.
The cooperation partner Orbit FET College handled the practical trainings at their own campus and the student-transport back and forth to the Training Centre. Furthermore, the reporting and submission of participant information and their learning outcomes are conducted by Orbit FET College. They ensured that each training process complied with the certification standards of the South African Education &Training Authority.
“The project was completed on time and very successfully”, concludes Christian Bust. A result which also has convinced BMW South Africa to engage into further discussions about additional trainings and assessments to potentially be handled by Arvato in the future.
